Air ambulance – what are they and what they do?

Air ambulance is exactly what it sounds like – an ambulance that works through air. Unlike the ground ambulance that traverses through roads, an air ambulance usually airlifts the patients from their location to the desired destination. Different types of aircraft is employed for different medical conditions. Depending on type of medical evacuation needed, an air ambulance can be either MEDVAC or CASEVAC.
The air ambulances also differ in their applicability – while some simply transport patients from one place to another without offering any in-flight medical care, others are well equipped and staffed to handle complex medical emergencies. MEDVAC and CASEVAC, mentioned above, refer to this very differences. While EMSOS operates in both these modes, we are mostly called-for in the cases that require air ambulance transit for patients that also require emergency medical care.
Some important points to be kept in mind
·         Air ambulances are particularly indispensable for remote areas and those with inhospitable terrain.
·         They are generally used for long distance patient commute.
·         Compared to a ground ambulance or other conventional mode of patient transportation, an air ambulance is much more convenient and comfortable, particularly for areas that are remote or lack effective means of connectivity.
·         An air ambulance transit usually takes a lot less time than a ground ambulance, so it should be your preferred mode of commute in case of critical situations.
·         Air ambulance is also a bit costlier than others. While booking one for yourself, always be sure of the type of aircraft, quality and number of medical staff and other facilities that are on offer. Consult your doctor or contact an EMSOS expert to assist you in this.
·         Since an air ambulance consists of a large number of cost components, it’s always advisable to go for ‘all-inclusive’ price tags so as to avoid getting trapped in any hidden costs.
·         If you are arranging for a long distance travel, look for RVSM certifications. These ambulances are more comfortable than the usual ones.
·         Many insurance companies cover air ambulance expenses. Before finalizing an air ambulance, make sure that the one you are choosing is covered.
